EXCHANGE CAPETOWN – SOEST 2022
„Roots of music“, das interkontinentale Austauschprojekt, begann mit dem Besuch der südafrikanischen Delegation in Soest im Februar/März 2020. In den Herbstferien 2022 konnte endlich der Soester Gegenbesuch in Kapstadt stattfinden. Der Flieger aus Südafrika ist längst wieder in Deutschland gelandet – was bleibt sind unzählige Erinnerungen und Eindrücke an ein großartiges Land voller Widersprüche. Neben zahlreichen ein- und ausdrucksstarken Bildern finden Sie hier ein ausführliches „Tour Diary”, Videos, Presseberichte und Publikationen aus beiden Kontinenten.
Vom 01. bis 14. Oktober hatten die Soester Roots of Music-Musiker:innen Zeit, sich mit George Werners “Little Giants” vom IMAD nicht nur musikalisch zu begegnen und auszutauschen. Während ihrer insgesamt neun gemeinsamen Konzerte und Präsentationen in Kapstadt, Barrydale und Montagu nutzte die Band auch die Chance, mit einheimischen Koryphäen wie Percussion-Legende Dizu Plaatjes, Posaunist Jannie van Tonder und der Sängerin und Grande Dame der Capetonian Jazzscene Sylvia ”Mama Kaap” Mdunyelwa zu konzertieren und zu jammen.
Der Tourbus führte die Musiker:innen über mehr als 2.000 Kilometer durch zwei Wochen, die neben Proben und Konzerten mit Präsentationen in den Primary Schools der Townships, mit Besuchen, Diskussionen und Vorträgen u.a. im District Six Museum oder im House of Hope des „Denis Goldberg Legacy Foundation Trust“ in Hout Bay, aber auch mit Sight-seeing – beispielsweise zu den üppigen Parkanlagen der Kirstenbosch Gardens – oder Fahrten durch die in farbenreicher Frühlingsblüte erwachende Karstlandschaft der Kapregion randvoll gefüllt waren.
Auch die Erinnerung an Auftritte in der Kronendal Music Academy in Hout Bay oder der unvergessliche Auftritt beim “Rotary Club am Kap” während eines der regelmäßig auftretenden flächendeckenden Stromausfälle spiegeln die immer noch extrem starken sozialen Kontraste in den Lebenswirklichkeiten der unterschiedlichen Bevölkerungsgruppen wider.
Der Austausch mit den südafrikanischen Freunden vom IMAD findet auch 2023 seine Fortsetzung: Der für den 23. März 2023 geplante Vortragsabend mit dem Dozenten der Capetown University Varkey George geht auf Initiative und Einladung des jugendlichen Crewmitglieds Laurenz Butzke zurück. Im November wird es dann im Rahmen der Projektwoche „Ndiyakuthanda Afrika“ und bei der Take5-Herbsttour der “hellway2high big band” ein Wiedersehen, -hören und -erleben mit George Werner, Babalwa Mentjies, Uviwe Caso und Carlo Fabe in Soest geben.
"Roots of music", the intercontinental exchange project, began with the visit of the South African delegation to Soest in February/March 2020. In the autumn holidays 2022, the Soest return visit to Cape Town/South Africa could finally take place. Now the plane from South Africa has already landed in Germany – what remains are countless memories and impressions of a great and beautiful country full of contradictions. From October 1st to 14th, Soest`s Roots of Music-musicians had time to meet and exchange not only musical ideas with George Werner's "Little Giants" from IMAD. During their nine joint concerts and presentations in Cape Town, Barrydale and Montagu, the band also took the opportunity to perform and jam with local luminaries such as percussion legend Dizu Plaatjes, trombonist Jannie van Tonder and the singer and grande dame of the Capetonian Jazzscene Sylvia "Mama Kaap" Mdunyelwa.
The tour bus took the musicians over more than 2,000 kilometers through two weeks, which, in addition to rehearsals and concerts, were filled to the brim with presentations in the primary schools of the townships, with visits, discussions and lectures, among others in the District Six Museum or in the House of Hope of the "Denis Goldberg Legacy Foundation Trust" in Hout Bay, but also with sight-seeing - for example to the lush parks of Kirstenbosch Gardens - or trips through the karst landscape of the Cape region, awakening in colourful spring blooms.
The memory of performances at the Kronendal Music Academy in Hout Bay or the unforgettable performance at the "Rotary Club am Kap" during one of the regularly occurring nationwide power outages also reflect the still extremely strong social contrasts in the realities of life of the different population groups.
The exchange with the South African friends of IMAD will continue in 2023: The lecture evening planned for March 23rd with Capetown University lecturer Varkey George goes back to the initiative and invitation of the young crew member Laurenz Butzke. In November, as part of the project week "Ndiyakuthanda Africa" and the Take5 - autumn tour of the "hellway2high big band", there will be a reunion with George Werner, Babalwa Mentjies, Uviwe Caso and Carlo Fabe in Soest.
